In 1973, 92 wooden tablets were discovered in a 2nd-century tomb in northwest China. Among other herbs listed, the Baical skullcap was listed in prescriptions for decoctions, pills, and ointments. One of the main remedies for 'hot and damp' conditions in Chinese medicine.
A cold and bitter herb it has been traditionally used as an anti-bacterial, circulatory aid, allergy relief from hayfever, and as a bitter and anti-inflammatory. It was also used for fevers, coughs (especially thick phlegm), and for colds and flu.
