A bitter-tasting herb, given in Chinese medicine to 'clear heat' and 'dry dampness' relieving fever, red and sore eyes, and sore throats. Used traditionally for diarrhea and dysentery and to stop vomiting. Has also been used for boils, abscesses, and acne. Used as a gargle for mouth ulcers and sore throat. contains berberine and is highly antibacterial.
